Author of The Thurston T. Turtle Series
About the author: Micki Bare has been writing since she was four. It was then that she and her cousin Teri became pen pals, writing letters between family gatherings. At the age of seven she opened one of the most cherished Christmas presents she would ever receive - a thesaurus. She served as news editor of William G. Enloe High School's Eagle Eye. As a freshman at North Carolina State University, Bare reported the news on the University's radio station twice a week and contributed articles to the Technician.
Bare graduated from North Carolina State University with a BA degree in Speech Communication. She also earned 29 college credit hours in early childhood education at NCSU and Meredith College.
After graduating, Bare worked for a newspaper; the SC Department of Social Services; and then taught for two years. In 1994, upon moving back to North Carolina, she accepted an administrative position as Head Start Director; a position she held for 12 years. As Director, Bare increased annual funding from about $300,000.00 to over $3 million. Enrollment increased from 60 children and families to 443. Quality grew along with quantity. When Bare resigned her post to pursue other endeavors, all seven Head Start centers under her direction had attained and maintained 5-star child care licenses; 3 had achieved NAEYC accreditation; and her program was recognized by the National Head Start Association as one of the 40 best in the country (out of over 2000). Bare also earned her Level III Administrator credential through the NC Division of Child Development while serving as a Head Start Director.
Bare began writing for Asheboro's Courier-Tribune in January 2000 as a guest columnist. By August 2000 she was a paid stringer with a weekly column appearing on Saturdays. In November 2002, the Arkansas News Bureau began distributing her column to Stephens Media Group newspapers nationwide (www.arkansasnews.com). In May 2003, she also began a weekly radio program on WKXR 1260 AM in Asheboro (www.wkxr.com), dubbed "Moments with Micki," which aired for eight years.
In 2005, Bare launched Inspired Scribe (www.inspiredscribe.com), a freelance consulting business. Bare offers early childhood consulting, freelance writing and copyediting through her Asheboro-based business. Through Inspired Scribe, Bare contracted with the NC Head Start Association to serve as executive director (Nov. 2006-Nov. 2010). Bare is currently employed as a web content manager/content strategist for Trone Brand Energy in High Point, NC.
